My opinion is that I’d like to try both someday.

Ideally, I’d like to try the LAX In-N-Out because this:

In-N-Out is overrated, and the only thing from Whataburger I ever really liked was the A1 Thick and Hearty Burger.

I’d prefer to spend my money at a quality local burger joint. If you’re in Arizona and have never been to The Chuckbox, that’s where you need to go.

Living in TX, we’ve had What-a-Burger for many years, but, at least in Austin, In N Out is a more recent arrival. I have tried IIO once, and was thoroughly unimpressed. If I’m going fast food burger, I always choose What-a-Burger, as long as I have an extra few minutes, because WAB can be a little slow. Their fries are, as the article stated, always excellent. And WAB taught me to stop putting ketchup on my hamburger. All it needs is mustard and pickles (and whatever else you want). There are a couple of burger joints in Austin that use some sort of secret sauce, but I’m not a fan. I’m not convinced that a hamburger needs to be a culinary experience.

Winner: What-a-Burger

I didn't even know this was a debate. I grew up in TX and lived on the west coast for the last 3 of 4 years. In-N-out has an unquestionably better burger. What they don't have is delicious chicken fingers that whataburger has.

Never been to whataburger but in-n-out is great. Kind of a scary place in Utah though. Always about five adults and a hundred kids running around rampantly not under control. I try to leave as fast as possible when I'm at one.

Does In and Out serve chicken strips with gallons of white gravy at 3am?

No?

Then why is this a question?

Seriously though, burger experience I can go either way. Fries are kinda meh at both. They’re freakin fast food, I wouldn’t drive out of my way for either.

That said, if they were both in the same vicinity; Whataburger has a better menu, better hours, and is generally a more comfortable experience.

And gravy. Gravy on fries, gravy on strips, gravy on burgers, gravy for you, gravy for me, gravy for everyone.

We have neither, and I’ve never tried either. So of course I do.

Just kidding I don’t.

I prefer a bag of Dick’s here in Seattle. When I travel to a state with In-N-Out, I stop at least once. Those are good burgers, Walter.

What-a-burger, IMO, is the best of the mainstream chains.

Living in the East, I’ve never tried In-N-Out (shut the fuck up, Donny!)

But the best of all chains is Backyard Burger if you’re lucky enough to find one. They’re real, fat, grilled burgers that are almost indistinguishable from something made at home.

The three big regional burger chains are In-N-Out, Whataburger, and Five Guys. Having had the pleasure of trying all three, I’d put In-N-Out on top any day, for exactly the reasons stated in the article. The ingredients, are just hands-down higher-quality than Whataburger. I’d put Whataburger and Five Guys in a tie for second, as I think that Five Guys as slightly better burgers, but their lack of shakes is a crime against fast food.

That being said, if I want a quick fast-food burger, my go-to (where available) will always be Johnny Rocket’s. You serve not just shakes, but actual malts, and they will happily put a gigantic slab of cheddar on top of your burger, as God himself intended.

My opinion is that this makes me sad, as I don't have access to a Whataburger or In-N-Out, as I live in the Northeast. I'd love to do my own taste test.

Since I have yet to have either, I will engage in hipsterism and claim (groundlessly) that the best cuisine is at Jack ’s, because I’ve been there a couple times and far fewer people will be familiar with it. In reality, though, I think I’ll come up with an opinion whenever I actually further southwest and not before.

Here in Austin we’ve had P. Terry’s which is a lot like In-N-Out, except better in some ways. The fries are kind of similar (neither are my favorite), but the burgers in my experience are better at P. Terry’s.

The first time I had In-N-Out was when I visited LA years ago, and frankly it has never come anywhere close to living up to the hype. Although I’d agree it’s slightly better than Whataburger, if the two were side by side I don’t know that I’d necessarily go to In-N-Out.

If you want a good fast food burger though, nothing beats Crown Burgers in Denver, CO.

So......... the sauce wins a burger comparison

100% VOID!

I got In-n Out while in Dallas for school.... the sauce taste like dead ass! A double plain is ok, but not anything close to a chingon Whatabuger. Not even close.

Between Whataburger and In-N-Out, the clear winner is Steak’n’Shake, hands down, at least for me.

Each place has their merits, but being a native New Mexican, if I really have to choose between the two, I go Whataburger...not because Texas (don’t get me started), but because Green Chile Double. If In-N-Out ever starts offering a green chile burger, they might swing my vote, but a Green Chile Double from the obnoxious orange W takes it every time.

At least until I have the option of ordering a Frisco Melt with bacon and a Hershey’s Special Dark/Orange Cream side-by-side shake. MMmmfff. Hnngggg. All the noises.
